I work in the Operations Division of NYC Emergency Management as a Public Warning Specialist. As a Public Warning Specialist I am responsible for preparing and disseminating notifications and alerts to NYC residents through the Notify NYC program. Notify NYC is the City of New York’s official source for information about emergency events and important City services. I have the ability to send these messages through multiple communication channels, including email, SMS, Twitter, and during major emergencies, the Wireless Emergency Alert System and the Emergency Alert System. I maintain situational awareness for all things going on around NYC by working with and monitoring communications between the New York City Police Department (NYPD), the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY), EMS, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and many other city agencies. On a daily basis, I utilize GIS software to determine population estimates, location of critical facilities, resources in the area, sensitive locations and other crucial information needed to conduct incident impact assessments during multi-agency responses.
The Emergency Management curriculum at Mass Maritime has set me up for success by providing me with a strong knowledge of the Emergency Management field. The professors in this department provide students with the tools employers are looking for and they work with students to make sure each student reaches his/her fullest potential. A Regimental background, combined with a strong academic background is what set me apart when applying for positions right out of college. The Regiment, the curriculum, and the wonderful professors have helped, and continue to help, me achieve all my career goals.
