The United States government requires individuals to use a Social Security number in order to receive wages and to keep track of your earnings and tax liability. Thus, international students, interested in working in the United States, must apply for a social security number through the Social Security Administration - a federal authority which issues the official card with a Social Security number. You are only eligible to apply for a Social Security number if you have the intent to work, have a job offer, or have begun working already within the regulations of your visa.

Social Security Number Application Process:

  • Fill out a Social Security Application Form (print most recent version from www.socialsecurity.gov)
  • Original passport with current visa, I-94 printout, and I-20 form
  • Request a letter verifying authorization to work from the Office of Multicultural and International Affairs.

The documents may be mailed to a Social Security office or delivered in person. It is strongly recommended that cadets apply in person for a faster process and to avoid the risk of losing documents.
