For over 100 years, Massachusetts Maritime Academy has been preparing women and men for exciting and rewarding careers on land and sea. As the nation's finest co-ed maritime college, MMA challenges students to succeed by balancing a unique regimented lifestyle with a typical four-year college environment. As a member of the cadet corps you will live, study, sail, work and play in an atmosphere that encourages you to be your best.
MMA's "4+1" Equals Infinite Possibilities
In its continual pursuit of keeping pace with contemporary educational and industry needs and trends, MMA launched its “4+1”combined undergraduate/master’s degree programs in fall 2018. This program allows qualified MMA undergraduates to complete both degrees in five years. Applying in their junior year, those selected dual-enroll in the graduate program, completing the first half of their master’s degree during their senior undergraduate year. Currently, there are eleven MMA undergraduate “4+1” students pursuing MMA’s various graduate degrees.
The executive-formatted graduate programs (alternate academic weekends) at MMA’s Waltham campus allows students to enter the work force after graduation while they pursue their respective master’s degree. "4+1" allows them to a) accelerate the completion of their graduate level education while b) benefiting from the professional experience and expertise of their more senior graduate cohort members; and c) enjoy significant graduate degree cost savings!
“4+1” is not for every MMA cadet, and the program is selective. But it is the right fit for those who seek an accelerated academic program to prepare them for the challenges and opportunities in today’s professional environment. Lauren Fitch, a “4+1” student (BS, Energy Systems Engineering and MS Facilities Management candidate) notes: “This program was a great decision for me because it allowed me to pursue my goals of continuing my education while kick-starting my career in energy management. I truly urge any current students at MMA who are thinking of applying to the program to jump at this amazing opportunity. It has been one of the best decisions I've made, and I look forward to completing the program and becoming a 'Double-Buccaneer'!”
