Day 12, July 5th, 2019
We were scheduled to finish off the week with a very interesting visit to the Port of Rotterdam, Harbormaster Division. Located just across the Erasmus Bridge, we were able to walk to the tall building located just next to the Hotel New York. Our hosts gave us an overview of what exactly they do and what services they provide to the port. We learned all about the VTS system they use as well as how they provide pilot services to nearly every vessel that enters the port. The work they do is something that goes completely unnoticed by the vast majority of people. With over 30,000 annual ship calls and over 400,000,000 tonnes of goods, the demand for piloting services continues to grow. After a brief tour of their office we wrapped up the session with some words from Captain Pandey. After this, we headed back to StayOkay to get ready for an evening event. At 515 we were leaving the hostel to go to a MEL Alumni Dinner as guests of Captain Pandey. The event was hosted in a beautiful venue and an amazing dinner was provided. This turned out to be a great networking opportunity and I took the time to speak to many of the other guests. After a few hours, we were ready to leave and return to the StayOkay.
