Trooper (Probationary) is an entry level position that consists of training and law enforcement duties within an assigned area for the Vermont State Police. Duties include participating in and successfully completing a prescribed formal course of studies at the Vermont Police Academy and a period of on-the-job training conducted by the Vermont State Police. Close supervision is provided by a higher ranking State Police Officer during the early period of training. Supervision moderates as an incumbent acquires skill and experience. Promotion to the rank of Trooper is automatic upon successful completion of all required training courses, Field Training program and a fully satisfactory rating at the end of the on-the-job training/ probationary period.
Training Academy work is performed in classroom and field situations, and includes a program of physical fitness training. Field duties are usually performed in a motor vehicle during an assigned shift of duty in all types of weather. Duties may require evening, night, weekend and other irregular duty hours and significant overtime duty. Exposure to danger may occur in a variety of ways. Attendance at meetings, court hearings, and seminars may be required. Incumbents will be required to wear a uniform and carry firearms during duty shifts. Emergency needs and Department priorities may result in interruption and/or cancellation of days off.
