Position Summary
The Boat Captain/Facility Technician supports the organization’s objectives of (1) tracking trends in water quality and expanding monitoring to better respond to a rapidly-changing Bay and (2) maintaining and creating vibrant buildings that allow for organizational growth and serve the Coalition’s public outreach mission. This three-quarters-time position, which will be based out of our Marion Science and Field Operations Center, reports to the President and works closely with the Director of Monitoring Programs. This position will be responsible for routine maintenance of the Coalition’s facilities around the watershed and for maintaining and operating the Coalition’s research vessel, R/V Buzzards Baykeeper. From May through September, the Boat Captain/Facility Technician’s schedule will include early morning water quality sampling (including some weekend days).

Position Description
The Boat Captain/Facility Technician is responsible for routine maintenance and repair of the various facilities owned and operated by the Coalition and the safe operation and maintenance of the 27-foot R/V Buzzards Baykeeper. Facilities currently owned and operated by the Coalition include: headquarters office in downtown New Bedford, Horseneck Point Life-Saving Station in Westport, Marion Science and Field Operations Center, Onset Bay Center (currently under construction), Woods Hole satellite office, Cuttyhunk boat waste pumpout station (open seasonally), two residences in New Bedford and Acushnet, and small barns.

Boat Captain/Facility Technician duties include, but are not limited to the following:
• Perform routine maintenance and repair to the various facilities owned and operated by the Coalition to ensure high-quality appearance and functionality.
• Inform and advise the President of any issues related to the facilities where action is deemed necessary.
• Maintain maintenance records and schedule preventative maintenance as required.
• Safe operation of the R/V Buzzards Baykeeper as well as the safety of passengers and volunteers on board.
• Basic vessel maintenance and cleaning, coordination of annual launch, haul-out, yard repairs and docking management.
• Collection of water samples in accordance with the schedule and protocols set by the Coalition’s Director of Monitoring Programs.
• Deployment, retrieval, and regular maintenance of offshore monitoring buoys under the direction of the Director of Monitoring Programs.
• Assist with the coordination of, and provide on-the-water support for the Coalition’s annual Buzzards Bay Swim event.
• Coordination and communication with building, field and on-the-water volunteers.

Qualifications
• Five years of experience with building systems operations and maintenance.
• Demonstrated boat handling, seamanship, and basic vessel maintenance experience, including a minimum of 5 years of experience operating a similar size and type of vessel and a minimum of 2 years of experience operating in coastal waters in the northeast, familiarity with Buzzards Bay a plus.
• Navigational skills must include the ability to navigate by GPS system and radar.
• Ability to perform duties with minimal supervision and solve problems as they arise.
• Good communications skills – polite and courteous with volunteers and boat owners and able to communicate effectively with service providers when corrective maintenance is beyond the basic skill level.
• Must possess basic knowledge of building code requirements.
• Must have basic computer operating skills: working knowledge of e-mail, word processing, and Excel spreadsheets.
• Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Desired
• CoastGuard OUPV (“six-pack”) license with a 50 ton license.
• Trade school education in one or more of the trades and/or Trade License(s).
• Associates Degree or equivalent in facility operations.

Physical Requirements
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds and climb ladders to 20 feet.
• Must be able to work in a variety of environmental conditions including heat, humidity, cold, and wet as conditions warrant.

Schedule and Compensation
The Boat Captain/Facility Technician’s schedule will be approximately 32 hours/week evenly split between boat duties and facility maintenance during the summer with limited boat responsibility during the winter months. From mid-May through mid-September, the Boat Captain/Facility Technician will be required to perform water sampling in the early mornings ~4 days per week (including some weekend days). Compensation commensurate with ability.
