ROI is looking for a Biosafety Consultant (Staff Scientist I) to join an Environmental Health and Safety consulting firm in the Greater Boston Area. This is a great opportunity to work with a well-known firm on challenging and exciting projects. The Biosafety Consultant or Staff Scientist I would be responsible for performing on-site EH&S services to laboratory and R&D facilities through the Boston / Cambridge area.

Position Responsibilities

Bio-safety and Laboratory Safety:

• Perform risk assessments and job safety analyses
• Conduct environmental sampling including air sampling and personal monitoring
• Inspect and test / audit the performance of safety equipment such as safety showers, eyewash stations, chemical fume hoods, and spill skits
• Perform respirator fit testing
• Assist clients in identification of appropriate biological laboratory containment levels an strategies for hazardous assessment and control

Hazardous Materials and Waste Management:

• Assist in shipping hazardous and biological materials
• Respond to chemical, biological, and after-hour emergencies
• Assist with incident investigations
• Assist EH&S staff with maintaining hazardous chemical waste program compliance

Laboratory Inspection:

• Conduct periodic inspections and compliance reviews of laboratories that use biological materials, hazardous chemicals, and specialized equipment to ensure they meed regulations
• Consult with Principal Investigators and laboratory personnel on inspection findings and provide appropriate recommendations based on regulatory compliance and best practice guidance
• Conduct follow-up with laboratory personnel as needed

Safety Training, Information, and Communications:

• Prepare and deliver classroom based and online laboratory EH&S training and biosafety training programs including laboratory safety, chemical hygiene, biosafety, NIH rDNA Guidelines, OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens, DOT shipping, and others
• Develop and update written EH&S and biosafety materials
• Prepare, update, and draft site policies, guidelines and procedures for biological and chemical hazards and processes

Position Qualifications

• Bachelors of Science in Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, or a related field
• 4+ years of experience in Environmental Health and Safety
• Experience in laboratories and research facilities preferred

Qualifications B.S in Biology, Microbiology, Health and Safety, or related field
Compensation Dependent on experience
