IMB Experiential Learning United Kingdom - Summer 2018
A group of fifteen students completed an experiential learning tour of the UK during the summer break this year. The experiential learning program to the U.K. is hosted by Southampton-Solent University that also has the globally renowned Warsash School of Maritime Studies affiliated to it.
The students had anchored themselves in the historic city of Southampton, an important port in medieval times and an important regional centre for centuries. The ‘Titanic’ had sailed on its ill-fated voyage from this very place and Southampton has a long history of shipbuilding with the city of London a few hours’ drive.
The hosts Southampton Solent University had arranged a packed schedule for our students that included classroom lectures at the University campus and guided tours to many of the iconic institutions of maritime importance including Portsmouth Shipyard, Timsbury ship handling training centre, a ship visit onboard the Carnival cruise liner ‘Ventura’ followed by a presentation at Carnival office located in Southampton. Seminars on chartering, ship brokerage and various aspects of the maritime business were conducted by guest speakers of eminence from organizations such as Drewry, Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers and the International Chamber of Shipping.
The students had the distinction of visiting the headquarters of the International Maritime Organization, the iconic Lloyd’s of London and the Baltic Exchange located in the London business district. The three weeks visit also had a strong multi-cultural learning component with a group of Chinese students from the Shanghai Maritime University and numerous other nationalities who interacted with the MMA cohort. The UK experience this year was truly rewarding in all respects since everyone had something to gain including networking opportunities for the future.
The cadets shared some snaps from the visit to the IMO, Lloyd's of London, Portsmouth Dockyard, P & O Cruise Lines office visit and the awards ceremony at Southampton-Solent University.
