The Massachusetts Maritime Academy Operations & Maintenance Department provides continuous maintenance and upkeep to the campus buildings and grounds.

Position:  Carpenter I/Locksmith

General Statement of Duties:  Carpenter/Locksmith maintains buildings and related structures while applying carpentry/locksmith techniques and using carpentry/locksmith tools to construct, alter, repair and/or install fixtures and structures. Inspects buildings to determine need for carpentry/Locksmith repairs or alterations, interprets and/or draws sketches or layouts of work to be done, and erects and dismantles staging and scaffolding. Related duties may be assigned as required. This position is designated “ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL” and is required to respond to emergency situations when directed.

Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants must possess the ability to communicate in an oral and written manner and establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others. Applicants must possess physical stamina and endurance including the ability to lift and carry heavy objects, stand or walk for extended periods of time, and climb and work from ladders. Applicants must possess knowledge of types and uses of materials and tools related to carpentry in addition to an understanding of safe practices and procedures. Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in carpentry, woodworking or cabinet-making work. A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, technical or vocational school, at high school level or higher, with a major in carpentry, woodworking or cabinet-making may be substituted for the required experience. Any equivalent combination of the required experience and education satisfies the requirements. This position also requires a valid Massachusetts Drivers License.


Biweekly: $1,563.48 (Grade 13/Step 1) Annual: $40,650.48 (Grade 13/Step 1)
