We are thrilled to have students at Wareham Elementary School participating in the Follow The Voyage-Share The Experience Program. The town of Wareham borders Buzzards Bay. 1/C Hunter Bulis is a Marine Transportation major who calls Wareham home. We look forward to welcoming these students as Massachusetts Maritime Academy cadets in the years to come.
STEAM Teacher, Elizabeth Hayes, introduced her students to our Follow The Voyage-Share The Experience Program’s Lifeboat Challenge. The challenge asks students to design a lifeboat that will hold 76 persons.
Here’s what Elizabeth had to say about the project:
“First to fourth grade students at Wareham Elementary School in Wareham, MA participated in Massachusetts Maritime Academy's Follow the Voyage Lifeboat Challenge. Each grade was given specific materials that they could use and were told that their lifeboats must float, and hold 76 "passengers''. I have included that list of materials each grade was given access to. Our passengers were plus builders. I have attached pictures of several of our successful lifeboats. Students worked on this project for approximately 4 weeks using the engineering design process and learned a lot about the science of floating and the TS Kennedy in the process.
Grade 1: 6 straws, 10 popsicle sticks, 4 cups, 4 pipe cleaners, tape and scissors
Grade 2: 6 straws, 10 popsicle sticks, tape and scissors
Grade 3: 12 inches of aluminum foil, 6 straws, 6 popsicle sticks, tape and scissors
Grade 4: access to any materials in our makerspace, tape and scissors
Thank you for sharing this voyage with us!”
