Cadet Spotlight: Meet 4/C Sebastian Wright (MENG - Milton, MA)

Anchor

Meet 4/C Sebastian Wright, a Marine Engineering major that calls Milton, Massachusetts home.  Milton is a suburb of Boston and the birthplace of former U.S. President George H. W. Bush.  Sebastian attended Glover Elementary School, Pierce Middle School, and Milton High School

Sebastian’s dad and his three older brothers love to sail.  His Uncle Bob was in the British Royal Navy. Sebastian made his first sailing trip was to the British Virgin Islands when he was just 18 months old.

When Sebastian was a young boy, his parent took him to see the HMS Victory in Plymouth, England.  This 104-gun ship belonging to the Royal Navy is best known for her role as Lord Nelson’s flagship during at the 1805 Battle Of Trafalgar

As a Boy Scout, Sebastian visited Battleship Cove in Fall River, Massachusetts.  He even slept overnight on the USS Massachusetts; the third of four South Dakota-class fast battleships built for the United States Navy in the late 1930s.  While at Battleship Cove, Sebastian and the Scouts toured submarine, USS Lionfish, and sounded the dive alarm.  The USS Lionfish is the only ship of the United States Navy named for the lionfish, a fish native to the Pacific Ocean and an invasive species wreaking havoc in the Caribbean today.  Ironically, during Sea Term 2023, Sebastian will see lionfish featured on the menu at some of the restaurants that he visits while on liberty in the islands.

Sebastian developed a love of the ocean on his family’s annual camping trips at Horseneck Beach in Westport, Massachusetts.  This two-mile long stretch of sand is located at the western end of Buzzards Bay, not far from Massachusetts Maritime Academy.  Sebastian also headed south for family vacations on Sanibel Island in Florida.  More than half of the island is dedicated to wildlife refuges.  Swimming in the warm waters of the Gulf Of Mexico was one of Sebastian’s favorite activities.

Wish all these encounters with the ocean and ships, it is no surprise that Sebastian would find himself at Massachusetts Maritime Academy pursuing a degree in Marine Engineering
