Bon Appetit: Everything Food - At Sea & In Port (1-23-23) Juvi's Chocolate Chip Cookies

Bon Appetit

Meet Juvi, the cherished baker on the campus of Massachusetts Maritime Academy and here aboard the TS Kennedy.  In previous years, Juvi would spend the entire Sea Term aboard the training ship. This year, because of obligations back home, Juvi will be disembarking in Aruba and returning to Massachusetts

This week, we’re shining a spotlight on Juvi to celebrate all of the sweet magic that he’s mixed up in the galley since the TS Kennedy departed Buzzards Bay.

Cadets and crew members rave about Juvi’s chocolate chip cookies.  In fact, they’re such a fan-favorite that Juvi bakes up 120 dozen cookies in a single evening.  That’s right, 120 dozen!   You can be sure that the 1,440 cookies disappear faster than it takes Juvi to bake them.

Like most professional bakers, Juvi is rarely willing to share his recipes.  He did, however, agree to give students participating in the Follow The Voyage-Share The Experience Program a glimpse at the ingredients needed to make 120 dozen chocolate chip cookies.  Are you ready?

To make Juvi’s recipe, you would need:
15 pounds of butter
3 tablespoons of salt
6 tablespoons of vanilla
26 pounds, 12 ounces of brown sugar
60 eggs
5 tablespoons of baking soda
18 pounds of semi-sweet chocolate chips
24 pounds of all-purpose flour

Can you believe those mega-amounts?

Now, let’s take a look at what happens in the galley.

There's absolutely  no licking of the mixing bowl  in Juvi's kitchen, but it's something fun to imagine, isn't it?

Watch this read-aloud video of the book, If You Give A Mouse A Cookie By Laura Numeroff.  Work as a class to write a book called:

If You Give A Cadet Juvi's Cookie

Follow the same pattern used by Laura Numeroff.  On each page, mention an activity that a cadet might do, and a place on the ship where the activity might take place.  Don't forget, you can get to know the plans of the ship by clicking on Explore The TS Kennedy on the homepage. Try to mention a different activity and a different location on each page. Illustrate your book.

Teachers & Parents: We'd love to have you email photos of selected pages from If You Give A Cadet A Cookie or  send along a video of your class reading the entire book.   It's up to you.  Emails be sent to ftvsubmissions@maritme.edu

We'll be sure to share all submissions with Juvi, Bob Cobb, and Captain Campbell.
