Shanghai Maritime University Exchange Program

Shanghai acts as the birthplace for Chinese maritime education. Therefore, it is not surprising that Shanghai Maritime University is found here. The University offers two (2) post-doctoral research stations, 17 Doctoral programs, 57 Master Degree programs, 45 Bachelor Degree programs, and 12 Associate Degree programs. An estimated 20,000 full-time students, including 17,000 undergraduates, have chosen to pursue their education at SMU.  SMU maintains exchange and cooperation with overseas academies, institutions, and industry companies, and has established close ties with over 50 institutions in aspects of teacher communication, joint school-running, scientific research cooperation, student exchange, etc.

The Shanghai Maritime University Exchange Program is generally a 2.5-year commitment, broken down as follows:

3/C fall semester         - Accepted students train to host SMU cadets

3/C spring semester   - Host SMU cadets (SMU cadets will room with hosts and participate in scheduled activities)

2/C fall semester         - Complete SMU and visa applications/ learn to live abroad

2/C spring semester   - Study in Shanghai, China

1/C fall semester         - Aid in advertising the program through information     sessions, open houses, and pictures.

FINANCIAL AID

This is an even exchange program. Thus, there is an exemption of all payments to the host institution except board (meal plan cost is about $2,000+), meaning that you will make all your regular payments to MMA. Note: Because you are still registered as an MMA cade your financial aid also applies.
Living expenses vary greatly depending on ones personal style of living but it's necessary to prepare about $3,000 as a minimum, to include visa, airfare and personal expenses. The actual cost of participating in the Exchange Program is more than possible. If you are unsure about the payment of the program's outside cost, please contact Financial Aid or the Office of Intercultural Engagement to receive advice
on the possibility of receiving scholarships or other means of support.

SCHOLARSHIP

Outgoing Semester Abroad MMA cadets will receive a small scholarship ranging from $500 - $1500.
