MMA Wind Turbine

Massachusetts Maritime Academy has taken steps to be a more environmentally responsible state facility. With a recently installed 660 kilowatt wind turbine, Mass Maritime has begun producing its own energy at a considerable pace.

The new turbine stands at 242 feet on Mass Maritime's campus located at the western mouth of the Cape Cod Canal, a location that is known for its abundance of continuous high winds.

The new wind turbine comes with significant educational and financial opportunities; proposing to reduce electricity costs by more than 27% and generating over one quarter of the campus electricity needs. This could mean an annual savings of $300,000 per year in electric bills. The turbine will also be used as an educational tool for students interested in pursuing careers in renewable energy.
