Cadet sailors enhance their training in leadership, boat handling, and communication skills while honing competitive techniques as members of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy’s Sailing Program. The larger sail boats that we take in under “Significantly Related Use” are used here to support our team.
MMA Sailing is governed by the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association of North America. ICSA is comprised of 7 districts; we compete in NEISA (northeast inter-collegiate sailing association.) NEISA is regarded as the most competitive district in ICSA. In order to be members in ICSA, competing teams need to be competitive in several types of sailing disciplines. They include co-ed, dinghy, woman’s dinghy, single-handed men and women, 3 man sloop, team racing and offshore. Our goal as a team is to provide cadets to sail competitively in all disciplines.
Our cadets participate in a multitude of regattas throughout New England and we host events as well. Some of the away regattas include; STC Intercollegiate Regatta, Kennedy Cup, McMillan Cup, Newport and Marion to Bermuda Races, local PHRF Races, numerous Dinghy Regattas during the collegiate season and other sailing events in the spring, summer, and fall.
The Sailing Program also provides vessels and cadets for sponsored training missions. These missions meld the resources and expertise of the sponsor, and the skills of MMA sailors in regional, national and international events that we might not have the opportunity to participate in without this support. The Cadets have raced in recent years in the PHRF-NE Championships, Newport to Bermuda, Marion to Bermuda, Jamaica Race, Key West Race and numerous deliveries to the event.
