Massachusetts Maritime Academy - Drama On the Canal Admissions - Drama On the Canal

The Maritime Players will perform their fall 2013 production of two sea plays by American Nobel Laureate Eugene O'Neill, Bound East for Cardiff and Ile, on Thursday, October 31, Friday, November 1, and Saturday, November 2, at 8:00 p.m. in Blinn Hall. Admission is free.

Bound East for Cardiff was the first O'Neill play ever performed when premiered in Provincetown during the 1916 summer. Its production led to the establishment of modern American drama. Set within a British tramp steamer in 1915, the play explores the lives of crew members during a difficult Atlantic crossing.

Ile was premiered by the Provincetown Players in 1917, and further contributed to the then growing reputation of its playwright. The play is set on a whaling steamer in 1895, trapped in the Arctic ice for nearly a year during a scheduled two-year quest for whale oil. The action follows the ship's captain and wife amid a crew threatening mutiny.

2/c Justin Vieira, an International Business major, plays roles in both productions. “I first got involved in the Players my freshman year. The experience has helped me to develop public speaking skills. Without the Players I don't think I would be as effective a cadet or squad leader. Not only have I learned to manage my time better, but I’ve gained the confidence to stand in front of a group of people and say what needs to be said with bravado and power. This theater program has expanded the boundaries of a regimented school to include creativity. It offers cadets another way to learn to express themselves,” Vieira noted.

2/C Kaleigh Miller, a Marine Safety and Environmental Protection major, plays a role in Ile and is the only female in the production. “This is my first semester acting with the Maritime Players although I have attended every production. The Academy can be difficult - physically, mentally, and academically. But, when you branch out to other sports and clubs it reduces the stress, making everything more enjoyable,” Miller offered.
