General responsibilities:
Accomplishes traditional Second Mate navigational duties including, but not limited to, chart inventory and corrections, voyage planning, navigational publication library and bridge navigation equipment. Coordinates with Master maintenance and updates of electronic navigation equipment. Establishes and maintains bridge recordkeeping including deck logbook, bell book, GMDSS log, Fire Control Panel log and Mate’s passdown book. Stands watch in port and at sea as directed. Coordinates deck watch officer assignments and duties for all activation periods. Primary operator of GMDSS and manages maintenance and operation of GMDSS. Acts as Vessel Security Officer and coordinates security issues with Company Security Officer, including maintaining Vessel Security Plan to full USCG regulatory compliance. Maintains inventory of equipment and coordinates regulatory inspections and maintenance. Keeps Chief Mate and Master apprised of bridge equipment status. In cooperation with Master, prepares and disseminates bridge/ship standing orders, emergency plans and standard operating procedures. Participates in all ship activations including Sea Terms, sea trials, Orientation Mini-Cruise, and ship transfers. May be required to attend shipyard availability as directed by Master. Supervise marine safety aboard vessels and in shoreside marine facilities.     

Qualifications and requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Marine Transportation or Nautical Science required. Chief Mate (Unlimited Oceans) USCG license with valid international endorsement (STCW). Possesses GMDSS operator endorsement, Vessel Security Officers (VSO), Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSD) and Medical Provider. At least 3 years seagoing experience as Second Mate (OICNW). Must participate in chemical testing random selection process.

Preferred Qualifications: Master (Unlimited Oceans) USCG license with valid international endorsement (STCW) in lieu of Chief Mate. At least 3 years seagoing experience as Chief Mate or Master. Advanced degree or study, teaching experience at a maritime college, or work experience aboard training ships.

$68,000 - $72,000.  The Academy offers generous benefit policies and a competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
