General responsibilities: Coordinates all maintenance projects with the Chief Mate and the First Assistant Engineer, as required. Assists the Chief Mate in the administration of the training ship’s deck department relative to safety and operations. Evaluates and recommends to the Chief Mate various maintenance projects that fall within the capability of cadets and crew and supervises record of cadet participation in maintenance. Assists the Chief Mate with the training of cadets and crew in maintenance, seamanship, lifeboat operations, firefighting, safety, use of hand/power tools, shipboard orientation and personal industrial hygiene. Assists Chief Mate in full compliance of the Training Ship’s Safety Management System and performs compliance inspections in conjunction with EPA Vessel Permit or environmental regulations. May be assigned in-port or at-sea watch standing as appropriate to the marine operations division. Participates in all movements of the training ship, such as transits to shipyards, sea trials, Sea Terms, Orientation Mini-Cruise, or transfers to other Academies. May be required to serve as operator of limited tonnage vessels. Performs inventories and inspections of cargo gear, firefighting and lifeboat equipment.
Qualifications and requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Marine Transportation or appropriate field of study required. Licensed as OICNW (Second Mate) of steam and motor vessel, any gross tons on oceans, radar unlimited issued by the USCG, STCW 1995 endorsed with GMDSS, VSO and VPDSD. At least two years of experience as Third Mate, Unlimited Ton Vessels. Proficient in MS Office programs and ABS Nautical Systems for PC. Must participate in chemical testing random selection process.
Preferred Qualifications: Advanced degree or study, teaching experience at a maritime college, or work experience aboard training ships.
Salary: $52,000 - $55,000. The Academy offers generous benefit policies and a competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
