Part-Time Academic Advisor (2 vacancies)

Please note, these are part-time non-benefitted temporary positions

The Massachusetts Maritime Academy Assessment and Advising Center, a component of the Academic Resource Center, oversees student placement testing, general knowledge testing, the academic skills program, and general academic advising that supplements, but is not a substitute for, the advising program overseen by faculty members as part of the academic programs.

The two individuals hired as academic advisors through the Assessment and Advising Center will each work up to 20 hours per week (during academic semesters only) to provide drop-in academic advising to students, some self-directed and others directed by MMA administration. The advisors will assist students in maintaining satisfactory academic progress in their degree programs and answer questions about course planning and curricula.

Applicants must possess the following qualifications:  A Bachelor’s Degree in a related field. Familiarity with higher education policies and procedures related to degree programs and associated curricula. Familiarity with college placement. Ability to provide timely, accurate, and supportive advice to college students regarding their degree programs. Knowledge of academic support programming at the college level. Computer literacy. Understanding of the unique mission of a maritime academy. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work Monday through Thursday daytime hours and some afternoons/evenings; up to 20 hours per week.

Preferred Qualifications:  Master’s Degree in a related field.  Experience in higher education advising. Familiarity with academic program software and advising software. Experience in academic remediation programming

Salary:  $25/hr

Start Date: Fall semester, 2013
