Supervision exercised: Subordinate professional, classified, and student personnel in areas of responsibility

General Responsibilities: The instruction of an academic course load of 12 credits per semester in a variety of professional maritime subjects such as: Basic Safety Training, Radar, ARPA, ECDIS, Ship Construction, Container and Intermodal Cargo Operations, GMDSS, Small Vessel Operations, Seamanship, Coastal and Celestial Navigation, or any other courses or practical laboratories within the Marine Transportation Department’s curriculum. Prepare course materials and examinations with minimal assistance. Access cadets to STCW standards, with or without simulation, and be familiar with USCG, IMO/STCW mariner training and competency assessment procedures.  Faculty hired will require Blue-Gold Sea Term participation (annual training cruise) on alternating years (all maritime safety personnel are subject to random drug testing). All selected candidates must comply with Massachusetts Maritime Academy military customs, uniforms and ranks as outlined in the current contractual agreement.

Qualifications and Requirements: 

-Tenure-track appointment at the Instructor level requires: Current USCG Second Mate’s Oceans Unlimited license- or ability to obtain one within one year of hire, full STCW 95 certification-or ability to obtain within one year of hire, accredited bachelor’s degree in appropriate field, and three years full-time experience teaching at accredited institution of higher learning or in professional service in maritime field (or combination thereof).    

-Tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor level requires: Current USCG Chief Mate’s Oceans Unlimited license, full STCW 95 certification, accredited master’s degree in appropriate field, and three years full-time experience teaching at accredited institution of higher learning or in professional service in maritime field (or combination thereof).    

-Excellent oral and written communication skills, proficient computer skills

-Demonstrated ability to fulfill the evaluation criteria of college level teaching and advising

-Understanding of and dedication to the Academy’s unique mission

Preferred Qualifications: Dynamic positioning training and certification and/or ECDIS training/certification. USCG PIC Endorsement: DL, LG, Chemical. Train the Trainer in simulation. 

Desired Assets:  Recent service on vessels with dynamic positioning or vessels equipped with ECDIS. Recent sea service on USCG license, experience in use of and training with simulation. Experience aboard LNG/LPG vessels, high-speed vessels, ITB/ATBs. Experience working with young people in teaching environment, ability to create positive learning environment.

Salary:  Commensurate with experience and subject to the MSCA collective bargaining agreement plan.
