The academy employs full time and reserve, professional, police officers, certified through the Massachusetts State Police certification unit as Special State Police Officers. Mission Statement The Massachusetts Maritime Academy Police Department’s mission is to protect and serve the academy community to a reasonable expectation with courtesy, patience, duty, teamwork, unity and strength. Massachusetts Maritime Academy Police Officers are appointed by the Massachusetts Commissioner of Public Safety under the auspices of the Massachusetts general laws, chapter 22-C Section 63 as special state police officers for the purpose of providing for the safety and welfare of the academy’s students, faculty, staff and guests while also protecting the academy’s property. Each appointed officer is vested with all the powers, privileges and immunities of a special state police officer while on the property under the control and jurisdiction of Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The major components of MMA police officers job are public safety, security and law enforcement. However, the emphasis of Massachusetts Maritime Academy police officers is on service, prevention, education and safety. The enforcement emphasis is on maintaining order through cooperative interactions utilizing the academy’s disciplinary system and our court system.
