Massachusetts Maritime Academy - Breathless in London Admissions - Breathless in London

...and having a blast! Alex Merz, 2010 MMA grad, has been on a veritable roller coaster ride since graduating in May.

Currently living in London England, working for ICAP Shipping UK as a Dry Cargo Broker for Panamax vessels in the Pacific, Merz is having the time of his life!  A 2006 graduate of Salem High School, Virginia Beach, VA, Alex pursued his Academy degree in International Maritime Business.  “My best friend in high school introduced me to MMA, his first choice and his older brother’s alma mater.  If not for the Arbeiter brothers I would never have known about MMA.  The majors offered here are truly unique.  I don’t have just a business degree, I have an INTERNATIONAL MARITIME BUSINESS degree,” Merz exclaimed.

This recent grad’s exciting life didn’t start when he left the Academy.  During his four years in Buzzards Bay, he interned at Maersk Line, Ltd., Norfolk, VA, the U.S. Flag Office for the largest container company in the world.  He visited Barbados, U.S. Virgin Islands; Miami, for the 2007 Super Bowl freshman sea term, on the T. S. Enterprise and Curacao, BVI for his last sea term.  In senior year, Merz and his high school best friend, Brian Arbeiter (MMA, IMBU, 2010), were chosen to represent the Academy in Istambul, Turkey, where they presented a paper they co-authored to an international congress of maritime universities.

“My plans are to continue working in the Marine industry, getting an MBA while earning other certifications along the way.  MMA has given me a great base on which to build a successful, professional career.  Being an alum ties me to a large network of well connected, knowledgeable grads. MMA, IMBU and the Regiment of Cadets are the three reasons why I am where I am today … in London, gainfully employed and loving it!” Merz affirmed.
